The nautical star is one of the top maritime tattoos in popularity.

The nautical star has five points. At each point of the star, there is a straight line that starts from the inside of each point and goes straight down to the middle of the star. This creates two equal sides to each point, 10 sections in total. One side of each point is colored in. Traditionally, these colors were usually black and white or red and black. Today, nautical star tattoos come in a large variety of different color patterns.

Before technology made sonar radar and GPS available, sailors would always use the stars to navigate the open waters of the oceans and seas. One of the most well known stars that was used for navigational purposes was the North star. The Southern cross star was also used to map directions, but it is not widely known like the North star. Sailors would use these stars and others to make sure they were traveling in the correct directions.

Back in the days of early sailing, many people were very superstitious. There has always been stories and legends of man eating sea monsters and other mythical creatures. Not only that, the oceans were a dangerous place to travel at that point in time. Without radar, the weather couldn't be tracked very well. You could only imagine what a hurricane could do to ships back then and sailors had very little warning of such events. Because of all these reasons, the nautical star began to commonly make its appearance. It became a symbol of tribute to the stars. To sailors, the stars were very important to their travels. The nautical star represented that importance.

I so love your tattoo hubs! I never knew there so many types and designs that were available, ans I thought they were purely decorative. It has been incredibly educational to learn more about the history of each one. Excellent presentation; voted up and pinned on Pinterest.

Rosemay, thanks for taking the time to come by. Your absolutely right. When you think about it, without technology, it is a surprise that they were able to do this.

Alocsin, thanks for taking the time to come by. There are actually a few different variations of the star. It really is surprising.

Tammy, thanks for coming by and it is good to hear from you. He may be able to find some designs under fantasy tattoos. I would suggest the "Encylopedia of Tattoos". One of the best tattoo books created.

Donna, always a pleasure to have you come by. I am glad you have enjoyed the series and I hope you have took away some interest in all the art and culture involved.

AE, I appreciate you taking the time to drop by. I also like the nautical star. I saw a great design the other day with two nautical stars and a rose in the middle. I am glad you enjoy the history aspect, your right, it adds a lot to the designs.

Gypsy, I agree. The nautical star is a great design. It can be versitile, worn by men and women and comes in different designs. I have actually started on it, but I have been having issues finding enough pictures for the article. I am working on it though. My best friend has his own tattoo shop so I asked him to draw some designs up. I promise, I will get it published as soon as I can. It is the least I could do for everything you have done for me:)
