HISTORY OF THE SPIDER AND TATTOO ASSOCIATIONS

When it comes to the popular spider tattoo and spider web tattoo, there is a wide range of positive and negative meanings that are associated with the two tattoo designs. Spider tattoos and spider web tattoos come in a variety of different designs, colors, and styles. Both the spider tattoo and web tattoo are classified as old school tattoos. In this article, you will learn all the positive and negative associations to these two classic tattoo designs.

It is believed that the spider tattoo originated in Malaysia tribes. The spider tattoo is closely linked to tribal tattoos all around the world. Throughout history, there are myths and countless legends that portray spiders all around the globe. The basic meaning of the spider tattoo varies from person to person. The spider tattoo and spider web tattoo have portrayed several things in history, but most commonly, the tattoo refers to our struggles in the web of life. Anything that enters the spider web will struggle to get out if they can. The spider tattoo can represent the struggle of life or how we struggle with life situations. This can relate to so many of us because we all go through hard times at some point in our life. If so, the spider tattoo design may just be for you.

When we look back in history, we find that the spider web has associations with the Native Americans and the dreamcatcher. The Anishinabe tribe is believed to have created the dreamcatcher. They believed that the dreamcatcher had magical powers. The tribe believed that "Spider Woman" would travel to visit all the newborn children in the tribe. Spider Woman would weave a magical web to protect the infants from anything that was bad. Once the tribe expanded, she was not able to weave the dreamcatchers for all the newborns of the tribe. Due to this, the women of the tribe began to weave their own dreamcatchers and place them at the cradle board of the newborns. Today, the dreamcatcher is a symbol of the Native Americans and it is thought to bring good dreams and hold off bad dreams. Do to this Native American legend and the relation of the spider web and weave, the spider web tattoo can hold the same symbolic meanings of the dreamcatcher. The spider web tattoo can represent "protection".

The spider has been part of numerous myths and legends throughout history. In Greek Mythology, a woman named Arachne was known as a great weaver. Athena was very jealous of Arachne's talents, so she chose to make Arachne's life a living hell. Once Arachne passed away, Athena felt awful. She felt so bad, she turned Arachne into a spider so she could once again be able to weave.

There are a variety of different legends that state the spider showed man hot to weave. In Europe, the spider is associated with negativity. It is believed that the spider is a partial reason for the black plague. In fact, there is a lot of negativity that follows the spider and spider web tattoo designs. Both the spider tattoo and spider web tattoo are considered to be popular prison tattoos. Both have been a longtime symbol of incarceration. These tattoos have also been associated with the KKK and other white supremacy groups throughout history.

This is one of the main reasons that people need to research the meaning of tattoo designs that they are interested in. Before you choose any design, make sure you fully understand what your tattoo represents and stands for. Although there are a lot of negative meanings that are associated with these spider tattoo designs, there are positive meanings as well.

Due to the vast range of meanings for each design, only the person wearing the design could tell you what it exactly represents. One of the more common meanings is that the spider web represents life's struggles. Both tattoo designs are a symbol of hardship. Someone may choose these tattoo designs to represent their struggles in the past and how they overcame them. Spider web tattoos are commonly wore by inmates. The spider web tattoo is very common in the prison systems. Men and women usually get these web tattoos inked on their elbows. Some people say that the web represents prison bars, while others say that they base the web's size on the length of their prison sentence. Racial groups are common in prison and both designs are a symbol of the white race. Spiders and spider web tattoos are also a symbol of the KKK.

When we look at the spider in nature, we can better understand these meanings. Some people consider the spider to be very intelligent and creative. Spiders are able to create some very unique webs to capture their food. In most cases, spiders are not aggressive to humans. Spiders eat a variety of different bugs and insects. Due to their consumption of insects, it actually balances life. This refers to the "circle of life". Spiders also are very fertile, giving birth to thousands if not more during a female's lifespan.

The most popular spider tattoo design has to be the "black widow spider". The black widow has the most unique look. The black widow spider is black with a red hour glass looking symbol on its back. As a tattoo, the black widow represents a female's attributes. As soom of you may already know, the female black widow is known for eating its partner once they are done mating. The black widow tattoo can also represent "dark love and mystery".

Voted up and great job as always. Spiders have never been one of my favorites but I don't run screaming from them. However dead, alive or imaginative I wouldn't want them crawling on me. I do like those spider web tattoos though. Looking forward to more.

I agree with the other contributors that although spiders are creepy the art work was phenomenal! I love the spiders webs and could cope with that, but I think to see such a life-like tatoo on someone of a spider would put me off going near them! LOL!!

I love dream catchers - the authentic ones and not the plastic multi-million production line ones - they are so beautiful and a wonderful piece of art.

I loved this hub especially the art work and the legends surrounding these fascinating animals. Voted up + awesome!

Oh, even though I am not fond of spiders myself I have to say that these pictures shows great art work! Even the hair on the spiders leg a visible on some of them! To me, spiders stand for fear and death and I would never want to have a tattoo of a spider. But I can also agree with they standing for wisdom and fertility. The tattoo with spiders crawling up on her neck is both beautiful and terrible:))

Thanks for the great information about spiders tattoos, to me it is like entering a new world!
