I was reading through hubs as I do almost daily now and I came up with the idea to write about this. I was born in 1983 and most of my friends here are older. I don't mean it in a bad way, but I wonder what those who were born in the 1950s, 40s, 30s, or even 60s think about how their life and surroundings have changed.
I have had a passion for history as long as I can remember, but the funny thing is, I didn't realize it until recently. I know that may sound backwards, but it is true. I guess I never thought about what I had passion for or what I liked doing as a hobby or in my spare time. I never knew what I wanted to be in high school, whether for a career or a job. So when I was in school, I decided to skip on college and live life the way I wanted too. Of course, that choice was stupid.
Anyway, I had always been good at writing through school, but I never thought about it until the last year or so. This site has really opened that door and I am thankful to those who read my work. But as I said before, I was always interested in history. I have always been fascinated by dinosaurs, old coins, old cars, the Civil War, and other events of the past. For example, take the California Gold Rush. It would be great just to visit that time for just one day. It would be cool just to see the world as it was during that time. Now that I am getting back on subject, I look at old pictures of Omar and I just think of how cool it would be to revisit that time and era just for a day.
Now, take yourself. I am just curious if others have these same thoughts. It is a little more then just wanting to go back to your childhood. It is being back in time when life was simple. Not in terms about making it or not, but in terms with technology. The advancements in technology over the past few decades have been nothing less but remarkable. I am 28 and already technology of the next generation is passing me by. I couldn't even name you all the new gadgets that are out now. It seems that technology is in overdrive.

The entire world has came a long way since the early century. Over the last few decades, technology has prospered very well. For the baby boomers, it may feel like a full 180 degree turn from what they grew up with. I just thought it would be interested to get all your thoughts and stories in one place, so I am writing this.
I don't remember the early 1980s very much. I remember my first gaming system was the Nintendo. I remember playing it as a child. I remember always having television and a phone. I recall getting a computer sometime in the 90s. For myself, the 90's were a great time. Granted that I was a child and there is nothing like being young and carefree, but it seemed like technological advancements were limited. The improvements were great, but it still felt like simple times.
For myself, the past few years have seen so much advancements and the entire world is connected. I am not saying that it is a bad thing, but these days are far from being simple. The advancements are great for communication and medical procedures, but the small business suffers going into the future. If you have a computer, you can reach the entire world. If we didn't have this, we all would be disconnected and nothing would exist.
It is remarkable how far we have come so far. It is great to reach the entire world from my living room. I can communicate with billions of people. But in all honesty, I do miss when times were simple. I now see everyone on phones where I use to see people talking to one another. I now see kids with their ipods when I once saw them playing football. I often wonder, will all this technology doom us one day? Will it fail us? How did we get this far in less then 100 years and we barely seen any advancements in the other few thousand years?
The advancements that are made do save lives, helps business prosper, and helps us communicate to the world. But in doing so, we have really lost a lot. In a sense, even though we all are connected by fiber optics, we have become disconnected to the simple things. In the end, where is the line drawn?
I miss those days when I walked outside and heard birds chirping and the sounds of children playing. Everything seems so busy now. Nobody seems to have time to talk face to face anymore. Is it wrong to want those things back in my life?
I know we all have computers and the internet or we wouldn't be here. I just wonder what your opinions are about technology and the path we are taking to the future. I hope you find this interesting because I look forward to your feedback. Thank you for reading.

A very cool put-together lyric! I love 'reading' about history, or watching re-enactments. But, so glad I'm not 'living' it. I'm much happier in the present. We have SO MUCH that we didn't have before. We've gone beyond convenience, lol.
I'd not mind to pick a day, to engage in backwards time-travel. However, more than a day would be over load. No showers, hair-dryers, electricity in general, no net, no .... Uh-uh! I just couldn't take it, lol.
But, it definitely looks fun in the movies!
I love technology. And, However, as much as I love technology, I don't think we have to give up countrysides, forests, birds chirping and crickets creaking to have it. I think we simply have to be responsible, use it wisely and recycle when we have the option.

I agree everything seems so busy now and life hectic, I too missed hearing the birds chirping and 3 years ago we escaped to the country, it's like going back in time!

I wrote a hub about the TV show Route 66 about two guys traveling around the country doing different jobs and meeting different kinds of people.I am about the same age as those guys and that show was maybe our fantasy. The things that are gone is the highway which has been replaced by the Interstate system. There was a lot of criticism of conformity back then but what may be missing is all these different people and customs that they ran across. An attempt was made a few years ago to revive the show but it was obvious the producers didn't have a clue as to what it was all about.
I've always wondered what it would be like growing up in the 1940's and 1950's when my parents grew up. I've heard things were so much simpler back then. I've always had a strong passion for looking at old pictures. I took up an interest in genealogy in college and researched my family history. But those old pictures and all the old stories my family used to tell me about their lives back then have always fascinated me. i wished my mom or nana or grammy had kept a journal or written a novel about their lives. That would have been a very important document to cherish. Yet, it never happened. They all died and took it all with them.

Dahoglund, thanks for coming by. That is interesting. I can't recall if I had seen that before or it was a documentary on route 66. Shows like that make you think. Not every advancement will be great. It makes me wonder about the future. Computers already do peoples work. Jobs will continue to decrease as computers do more work. Take care.
Jfay, so sorry about your loved ones. I can appreciate that. I have a passion for old pictures and antiques, old coins. You have to love the old stories. I lost my grandpa in 1994 and I remember all his stories. I miss him a lot. It is funny how life travels almost in a blink of an eye. Thanks for coming by and be good.
I absolutely love this hub! I have thought about this so many times lately. I do have to chuckle though that at 28 years old you think technology is passing you by. Try being middle-aged and trying to deal with all this technology. You should have seen me when I bought my iphone. My students could always work this stuff better than I could and I usually learned technology lessons from them! I marvel at you young people and all the technology you did grow up with.
When I grew up, computers were the size of and entire room in a house. So, to me, it is amazing that they can now be hand held. It is amazing. I enjoyed this hub, especially your photos. Voted up!

Suzettenaples, thank you very much. Glad to me you smile. But you found the logic behind the article. I am 28 and mainly aware of technology, but it is coming out in a fster pace then I have ever seen before. I don't know if anyone saw the hands surgery to the female. That is remarkable with all the nerves. But at 28 and into business, I can't keep up. I do try somewhat, but it is like everyday there is something new. We are seeing far more less years/months in between upgraded models. It seems one is out and another comes out in 2 weeks. It shows how many people have invested in it, plus how competitive the sector is as well. I get a new phone, the best out, and one is better within a week. Its just hard to keep up.

I got 20 years on you lyricwriter! Just yesterday I was talking to someone about back in the day and listening to vinyls on a record player.
Also my granddaughter who is 5 yrs old came home from her friends house and told me her friend has a REAL phone in her bedroom that plugs into the WALL and she can call her mommy and daddy...Faith is used to cell phones! hahaha! I selected the 1950's because I love that era's music! I would never want to go back again, I appreciate today much more then yesterday BUT yesterday was nice. Wow what a GREAT hub! Commenting on your situation, I saw a child today walking down the street on a phone. She had to be 6 or 7. I do say her communication skills were beyond her age, but it shows how times have changed for sure. That is my vote. The 50s. I just wanted to see where I grew up. It was booming at that time. Loved this hub. I too had to laugh when you say technology is passing you by at 28. I am in my 60s so barely keeping up with it. When your young and have a young family you don't imagine that one day you will be asking them for help on how to use ipods etc. Grown ups are supposed to know more than their kids. Lol

Change is constant. I recall my parents saying the same things about their, "good 'ol days..." My grandmother was born when there were no airplans... she died when she was 94. What a world of change...

Super hub! Brought back a lot of memories. I'm grateful for cell phones and comps but I came into this world too late to enjoy the 50s and was too young for the hippie generation of the 60s so I sort of wish I could see some of those eras over agian. Especially the 50s as my all time favorite movie is Grease. I love the music of the 50s, 50s, 70s and some from the 80s as this is my growing up period. As a 2 year old I still remember being in a 50s Chevrolet sigh what cars!!!

Gees I must have missed something, you are talking to the world using technology and what…the birds have stopped TWEETING? The world still revolves and the universe is expanding, even faster ( technology damn it) which means the sun will stop shinning some time in the future. Yep the birds will stop flying later than sooner.
Know what you mean, we are ignoring the important things such as love, compassion, empathy and song…..but don’t blame technology blame human kind who have lost their sense of priority. Technology makes us wiser not smarter. Have a passion for what you are saying, and you say it well. The sun shines and we appreciate it, if only we could appreciate the energy!!!!

Hi, Lyricwriter....This is a very insightful hub. Since I was born in 1943, I've personally lived through a lot of history. In fact, I recall so many "firsts" and special events it would take me hours to list them. Ironically, I now take for granted many things that weren't even an idea when I was young, yet rarely stop to think about that. Thanks for reminding me. Regards, Jaye

What an interesting read! My grandfather-in-law recently died at the age of 92 and we often talked about the firsts and wars he lived through. Things really have changed over the years. When I started college, there was no internet which is crazy to think about. Great hub.

My grandparents saw the first cars, first airplanes and if they were alive would be amazed at today's world. Times were more simple...and I must say, not all that bad. Although we are more connected than ever...we are also more disconnected from people relationships in many ways as you indicated from your observations. Voted up and interesting.
Technology is moving so fast today. I was only born in 1985, and I remember telling my seven year old cousin recently about cassette tapes, and I felt like an old man. I also tried to explain how a pay phone worked, but it was like I was speaking a foreign language. Great hub.
As for which era I'd like to experience; I know it'd be tough, but I'd like to go back to the early 19th Century, just to experience life at the time.

Obviously a great topic. Enjoyed your hub, immensely, I would have loved to experienced life after the Civil War, since I am a natural people helper, and so many changes occured after that. Since I was born in the 50's, I didn't miss much in the way of change....I dislike technology for only one reason, and that is what it has taken in the realm of geniune human relationships, real conversation and traveling through life together looking up, rather than down at a screen. Walks, conversations, and sharing real life stories and its lessons are the center of my world today, and unlike today, wisdom and knowledge were more than just information. Today, media slant and exploitation create a world of contempt, rather than understanding, and that is not "a better world". Up, interesting and well written!

This is such a great hub! I was just talking to my 11 yr old stepdaughter about this subject this evening. When I told her that when I was growing up 60's-70's; we had no cell phones, VHS, DVD's, microwaves, etc. She was floored. How did you call your mom? With the home phone or a payphone....can you believe there is a whole generation that can't fathom not having a cell phone in their pocket? Perfect timing for this hub.
