WOLVES AND ASSOCIATIONS

The wolf tattoo is a very symbolic tattoo that holds deep symbolism to many different cultures throughout history. Wolf tattoos have been associated with a variety of different cultures, most commonly the Native American Indians. The wolf was highly significant to numerous tribes across North America and other parts of the world. To many, the wolf was a very powerful creature and had great powers.

Wolves are a great example of prime survivors. The wolf has been around for tens of thousands of years and they have showed the will to survive in harsh locations throughout the world. The wolf is a prime hunter that is very skilled and very intelligent. Wolves rarely hunt alone unless they have been out-casted. Wolves hunt in packs, family groups that increase their chances of success in nature.

The wolf has been portrayed in all sorts of different ways in present day and the past. The wolf has been seen and read in mythology, literature, movies, and legends. The wolf has also found itself in such stories as "Little Red Riding Hood" and "The Three Little Pigs". There has been a variety of different shows that portray werewolves, such as MTV's hit show "Teen Wolf". The werewolf in definition is half human and half man. They have also been portrayed in Roman mythology, as in the story of "Romulus and Remus". Through all of this, it has created our own opinions about wolfs. Wolves have been portrayed as good and evil. The same can be said when we look at the meaning of the wolf tattoo. The wolf tattoo has positive meanings and negative meanings, just as it has been portrayed in life.

The wolf was mostly symbolic to the Native American Indians. The wolf was a totem animal in Native American cultures. Totem animals are spiritual animals that are sent to help guide us through our life. In the Native American culture, the wolf totem symbolizes loyalty and perseverance. In Native American legends, the wolf had great powers given to him by the Great Spirit. They had the power to change into a man if a person was in trouble.

If we look back further in time, the wolf was commonly seen as an evil creature. In ancient Christianity, the wolf is said to be a symbol of Satan. The wolf was commonly seen as bad luck or bad omen due to its association to Satan. The fierce attributes of the wolf gave them reason to believe such a thing. The wolf was commonly associated with evil in the past. Today, they are not viewed as an evil animal and they are usually no longer related to bad things.

Wolves are also associated with family, which is actually one meaning of the wolf tattoo. There are two reasons for this. Wolves hunt in wolf packs and this may be one reason that they have survived for so long. Since the wolves hunt in packs, this increases their odds of finding food. This also gives them a territorial advantage as well against other predators. Another reason why the wolf is associated with family is because of their mating styles. The wolf will only mate with one partner while the pair is alive. Wolves will mate for their entire life. Wolves are also viewed as caring parents also. These are the reasons why the wolf tattoo is commonly associated with family.

WOLF TATTOO MEANINGS AND DESIGNS

The wolf tattoo is very symbolic and has a host of different designs and meanings. The wolf tattoo can express both positive and negative meanings. Below, you can find a list of all the symbolic meanings of the wolf tattoo.

  • Devotion
  • Masculinity
  • Triumph
  • Success
  • Mystery
  • Valiance
  • Shrewdness
  • Dark
  • Evil
  • Satan
  • Ferocity
  • Family
  • Strength
  • Loyalty
  • Wisdom
  • Honor
  • Power
  • Fearless
  • Independent

One of the most common meanings of the wolf tattoo is "loyalty". This meaning comes from the fact that wolves live together in a pack and the wolf will die for their family. This fact also explains another common meaning of the wolf tattoo, "family". Wolves are considered to be caring parents when they care for their young. As you read earlier, the wolf mates with the same partner during their life span. The wolf tattoo is a great way to display your devotion to your family. Some people will choose to get a wolf tattoo and associate their names inside the tattoo design. Others may want to get a wolf paw tattoo and have the names of their family inked inside the design. Some people can represent their family by having three or four wolves in a tattoo design.

The wolf tattoo can also represent "love". This meaning can be portrayed by two wolves in a tattoo. In such cases, both wolves usually have a calm and gentle look. They are often portrayed next to one another, basically touching. Some people try to give such tattoos a cute look by adding hearts. This can be done with a heart in the background or clouds made out of hearts just to name a few. Just like family designs, these tattoos may portray your name and your partner's name.

One of the most popular wolf tattoo designs depicts the wolf howling in front of a full moon. In ancient legends and even today, bad things are usually associated with a wolf when the moon is full. Since the wolf is often associated with the dark, it is believed to be a symbol of bad things in the dark. As far as the meaning of such a tattoo design, it symbolizes what you want it too.

As you already read, they are a few different wolf tattoo designs that you can choose. Here are a few of them below.

Wolves can be portrayed with other animals such as bears, eagles, deer, bison, or owls. It can also be associated with trees, the moon, mountains, snow, rocks, or water. It is often associated with Native American symbols as well, such as feathers and dreamcatchers. Many people feel that the extra symbols in the tattoo make it look better. However, that is your choice to make.

Absolutely fascinating article. The pics are tremendous too. I´ve never seen so many different images of a wolf.

I´ve had a soft spot for them since I learned what they meant to the American Indians, but I didn´t really associate the ´pack´ of wolves as being family oriented. DUH!!! How daft am I. Really really enjoyed this. Thank you.

Another fascinating discourse into beautiful tattoos. My favorite are the black and red wolves, tribal-style, in the middle. Voting this Up and Beautiful.

I have two wolf tatoos And now I am looking for that perfect one to place on my back the center will be a paw print with wolfs in each of the pads this will be black and grey looking for something to go with it just to make it pop will be doing this from mid to upper back any idels

Dennis, thanks for the question. You could go with a howling wolf with a moon in the back ground. We are not going traditional, so no howling in front of the moon. We want the moon to light up the background, possible with a few teepee, rolling smoke from the fires. I don't know if you have an association to Native America, but it would make for a great tattoo. You have your entire upper back to work with. If you want something real fierce, you can have a wolf breaking through the skin. I will throw another one down. I saw a tattoo years ago and it was a wolf in deep snow. I never asked what it meant, but it was a bad tat. It had the mountains, moon, beautiful sky, snow covered pine trees, and two small baby wolfs. The wolf is symbolic of family, courage, ect. Are you looking for anything symbolic or just a great design? Your paw is the center piece, a howling wolf on the right bottom with tribal art perhaps.
